MARYS — Discussion of freedom and the founding fathers resonated through Memorial Park Sunday evening as local residents gathered for a Constitution rally put on by the John Birch Society.
Chapter leader Bob McCune said he hoped those who attended the event took much home with them. “I was hoping for a little bit bigger crowd, but I am excited for the people that came tonight,” McCune said. “I hope what they learned and what we talked about will ignite a fire and they will share it with others and that will ignite a fire in them. I hope they learned something they didn’t know.” The society and those who support it stand for the Constitution and the rights, liberties and freedoms within it. McCune said they are striving for government officials to be elected who will follow the Constitution, “under any circumstance.” St. Marys resident Bob Valentine also said he stands for the Constitution and what it has to offer to America. “I am thrilled about the rally and I hope they do exactly what I said they should and wake up,” Valentine said. “We have to wake up and take the power that belongs to the people back.” Former Ohio Attorney General Candidate and John Birch Society of Delaware County Organizer Robert Owens said he was pleased with the rally. “The fact that people are starting to care again, this is a very exciting development,” Owens said. “The great leadership within this society gives us great hope.” Throughout the evening Valentine, Owens and the Rev. Mark Foor spoke to the crowd. Foor stressed the importance of Americans taking action and getting back to the principles that America was founded on. “All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to stand neutral,” Foor said. Foor discussed men such as Wall Street bankers and others who are not being truthful. “They are going to bust this dollar, they are going to bust this nation and they are going to make you dependent upon the government,” Foor said. Valentine also emphasized a similar point. “It isn’t America that needs changed, it is the government in America that needs changed,” Valentine said. He touched on the creation of the Federal Reserve, the value of money and “how there is something wrong.” “One dollar in 1913 is now worth 4.71 cents in 2008,” Valentine said. “We need to end the fed. It is nuts for us to allow such an organization to control our money. If they were to spend money only on things that were Constitutional there would be no need for an income tax.” He praised the founding fathers and the document they created. “We need to change our government, we need to keep our Constitution,” Valentine said. “It was written with the possibility of amendments so it could stay up to date. They knew what they were doing.” Owens stressed Valentine’s point of the Constitution. “It is a great document, but if it doesn’t have God fearing citizens behind it, it doesn’t matter what is in it,” Owens said. Those in attendance and who are not already part of the John Birch Society were invited to join and take part in the meetings. The society meets at 6 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month at the Spring Street Coffee House. The next meeting will be held Oct. 7. |
