Bids Opened For Joint Street Project Print E-mail
Friday, 11 September 2009
By MIKE BURKHOLDER
Managing Editor
ST. MARYS — Bids for a joint street resurfacing project in St. Marys and Wapakoneta came in less than the engineer’s estimate Thursday. Two firms submitted bids for the project, which will be partially funded through the Ohio Public Works Commission. Shelly Company, out of Findlay, submitted a bid of $128,758.90 for the Wapakoneta portion and $114,146.10 for the St. Marys portion for a total of $242,905. Freisthler Paving, out of Sidney, was the apparent low bidder. The firm submitted a bid of $121,797.46 for the Wapakoneta portion and $112,385.40 for the St. Marys portion for a total of $234,182.86. The engineer’s estimate for the project was $257,000, including $127,000 for the St. Marys portion.
“We are very pleased with the results,” Engineering Superintendent Craig Moeller told the newspaper.
“I thought that we’d get one more bid. On asphalt, you are limited.”
Wapakoneta Engineering Supervisor Mary Ruck said the project will help address several streets in the city. Both officials said they have worked with Freisthler Paving on previous projects.
“We have seven individual sections we will pave,” Ruck said.
“We will be able to spread it around.”
In St. Marys, the project will include McKinley Road, from Scott Street to the railroad tracks, and Cleveland Avenue, from Scott to Axe streets. In Wapakoneta, the project will include East Benton Street, from Wagner Street to the new pavement, Peach Alley, Van Buren Street, Viet Street, Parlette Court, Apollo North, from Lowes to Bellefontaine Avenue, and Plum Street, from the elevator to Buchanan Street.
In June, the cities were each awarded $100,00 as part of the stimulus program. The grants came with a 10 percent local match.
Moeller said officials at the public works commission must approve the plans and contractor before work can begin. Both projects are still scheduled to be finished this year.
