Summer sales Print E-mail
Friday, 14 August 2009

ST. MARYS — Signs were posted and local residents were walking the streets Friday looking for great deals at a list of stores. The opening of SummerFest Thursday night brought the tables and merchandise out on the sidewalks Friday for the super sidewalk sales. Some of the stores and businesses that had items out included the St. Marys Trading Co., Canalside Book Shop, The Island Shoppe, the Family Center and Goodwill.
Celina resident Bob Hines was one enjoying the festival with a variety of items  available to shoppers.
“I am selling cook books for the church,” Hines said. “Most women love cook books.”
He also said flowers die and people eat chocolate, but cook books can always be used.
“Cookbooks make good presents,” Hines said. “People who like cook books go crazy over them.”
Hines was selling his cook books and his church, New Start Community Fellowship, received the profit from the sales.
“Today, it’s been real good, I have sold about 12 cook books,” Hines said. “I have been coming here at the Trading Co. for 18 years.”
Albert’s Sporting Goods employee Kaylah Bistrek said the store saw an increase in foot traffic with the sidewalk sale.
“Yes, it keeps us busy,” Bistrek said. “We have jerseys, shorts, basketballs, blankets, baseballs and shoulder pads.”
Wapakoneta resident Melissa Fisher was one shopping at Albert’s with her son Tommy.
“This is a good deal,” Fisher said of a Wapakoneta bag on one of the tables.
The Island Shoppe employee Judy Von Blon said she had seen a lot of business during the sidewalk sale at the store.
“Good, it’s been excellent,” Von Blon said. “We have a lot of OSU stuff and good sales.”
Von Blon said she believes the family-oriented store draws people in.
“It’s a long standing family store,” Von Blon said. “I think people like coming here.”
She said she believed it was a great day for the sales and looks forward to the rest of SummerFest weekend.
“The weather is good, it should be a great weekend for everything,” Von Blon said.
