By KATIE YANTIS Staff Writer ST. MARYS — The entertainment tent at SummerFest was filled Friday afternoon with those practicing for the talent show to be held today.
Participants hit the stage Friday in preparation for the show, rehearsing their acts — ranging in singing and dancing to sign language. “Today we just want to hear or see what it is that you are doing,” talent show chair Vickie Shurelds said. Alyssa Harner, 11, daughter of Drew and Becky Harner, practiced her song “Skinny Dipping” by Whitney Duncan. She took a minute before going on stage to tell The Evening Leader why she chose to participate in the show for her first year. “I love to sing and her song I thought would be good for me to sing,” Harner said. St. Marys resident Marissa Williams and her friend Maddie Frierott plan to use a dance routine set to the song “Disturbia.” “We thought it would be fun and she lives way up in Michigan, so we barely get to see each other,” Williams said. The two agreed on their favorite part of dancing. “I like the moves,” Frierott said. Madyson Settlage, daughter of Amy and Chad Settlage, performed a dance routine at the Little Miss SummerFest Queen pageant and decided to switch things up for the talent show. “I will be singing, a song called “Girls Night Out” by Miley Cyrus,” Settlage said. She had her own reason for participating in the show. “Just the energy and rush you get when you are up on stage doing what you love,” Settlage said. She said she has been performing in the talent show for three years. Chelsey Opasik and her best friend Josalyn Schamp shared a microphone at the talent show practice Friday afternoon. “I just like being up there,” Schamp said. Opasik told how the duo takes part in the show every year. “Just having fun, it’s something fun to do and we are best friends, so we do it,” Opasik said. Celina resident Jena Sweigart and her boyfriend Tony Lefeld, resident of St. Henry, sang a duo to a song titled “Cruisin.” “I just felt like I need to express my musical talents in some way,” Lefeld said when asked why he chose to participate in the show. “And she asked me, too.” Sweigart added that she has been in the show before. “I did it two or three years ago and it was fun so I thought I would try it again,” Sweigart said. The performances will be critiqued by three judges — Dave Woodward, who is employed at Clear Channel in Lima, Dan Basinger — a choir director at Lima City Schools, and Justin Luster — a record producer from Lima and a member of The Humble Sons gospel group. The first, second and third place winners in each age group will go home with a cash prize Saturday. First place will go home with $75, second will go home with $50 and third will go home with $25. The show starts at 1 p.m. at the entertainment tent today. Those participating in the show need to be registered by noon. |
