BOE Awards Project Bids Print E-mail
Thursday, 13 August 2009

ST. MARYS — St. Marys Board of Education members awarded the bids for the site improvements at the new grades six-to-12 building during their meeting Wednesday night. The package, which was opened July 29, went to Ferguson Construction with a bid of $1.7 million.
“It’s basically the landscaping, parking lots, shrubbery, trees, grass,” Board member Rees McKee said. “We want to try to get the base asphalt down this fall to get the area cleaned up.”
Chad Stevers, with Gilbane Building Company, said the bid came in more than the engineer’s estimate but is still within the project budget.
“That package is well within the allowed site budget and overall project budget,” Stevers said, adding that there are two packages left to bid for the project — technology and loose furnishings. “We’re still projecting to finish under budget will all the projects.”
Stevers said the projected timetable to finish the new building is still the same.
“We had some ups and downs, but we still see no reason why in September 2010 you can’t start school,” he said.
With the projects at East, West and Dennings, Stevers said the crews are working to get things done. He said the state inspectors are scheduled to see the elementary schools on Friday and inspections at Dennings will take place next week.
“East, West and Dennings all look great,” Stevers said. “They all look brand new.”
West Elementary Principal Lisa Elson said she visited the buildings.
“The buildings – they look great,” she said. “The crews did a great job.”
Superintendent Mary Riepenhoff noted the buildings are still under construction.
“East and West are not done yet,” she said. “There are still phases left to go.”
Elson said the elementary schools will hold an open house for the new buildings Sept. 10.
Technology Coordinator Kyle Menchhofer said the computer systems at the high school and junior high schools are ready to go.
“The areas we can get into at the elementary schools are set up,” he said, also thanking the five St. Marys students who helped at the District Service Center during the summer.
