Dorothy A. Shuffelton, 96, of 88 N. Spruce St., St. Marys, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community. She was born March 1, 1913, in St. Marys, a daughter of Charles and Alice (Perraut) Axe.
She married Frank B. Shuffelton on April 22, 1937, he preceded her in death on April 2, 1998.
She is survived by two sons, Frank C. (Jane) Shuffelton of Rochester, New York, David (Julie) Shuffelton of Fort Loramie; five grandchildren, Amy (Noah Sobe) Shuffelton, George (Michelle) Shuffelton, David “Rusty” Shuffelton, Daniel Shuffelton, Meghan Shuffelton; four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Ann Haggard, Mary Axe; a brother, Charles Axe.
She was a 1930 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School and a 1933 graduate of the St. Rita’s Hospital School of Nursing.
She had worked as a registered nurse at the former Otis and Gibbons Hospitals in Celina and helped establish the obstetrics department of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys, from which she retired. She was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Altar-Rosary Society of the church, also the Legion of Mary. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed doing needlepoint work, she loved flower gardening and was an excellent cook and baker.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Anthony Cutcher officiating. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, 314 W. High St., St. Marys, where memorial contributions may be directed to the Friends of Holy Rosary School. Condolences may be sent to the family via Millerfuneralhomes.net.
