By KRISTA HAYES Staff Writer WAPAKONETA — Bidders set a new record Friday for the grand champion steer.
During the Junior Fair Livestock Auction held at the Auglaize County Fair, Kaylee Fisher's Grand Champion Market Steer sold for $7,500, beating last year's record of $7,200 held by Nathan Turner. Fisher, the daughter of Stephanie and Jay Fisher, of Wapakoneta, is a member of the Wapakoneta FFA. She could not be located for comment after the auction. Area businesses placed bids on the prize-winning steer with buyers from Advanced Agri-Solutions Cooperation, Minster Bank, Bambauer Fetilizer and Feed, S&S Volvo & GMC Truck, Schaub Excavating Inc., Quietcove Holstein Farm, Beck's HI Breds, Harrod Crop Insurance Agency Inc. and Harrod Insurance joining together to place the highest bid. Continuing with the high bids was Wapakoneta resident Paige Klopfenstein whose Reserve Champion Market Steer, Linus, born in April 2008, sold for $2,200. Last year Candace Muir, who earned the title of Showman of Showmen this year, sold her Reserve Champion Market Steer for $4,200. Buyers who chipped in to bid on the Star Spangled Clovers member's steer were S&S Volvo & GMC Truck and Becky and Earl Schaub. "It's very exciting to walk away with one of the highest bids today," the daughter of Jann and Tim Klopfenstein and a member of the Star Spangled Clovers said. "I'm probably going to put the money in the bank to save for college where I would like to major in a field where I can work with kids." Mitch Oen, the son of Rachel Oen and a member of the Wapakoneta FFA, earned $1,050 for his Grand Champion Dairy Market Steer. Oen's steer was purchased by a consortium of Alan Davis Insurance Agency, WWA Farms Custom Manure Pumping and S&S Volvo & GMC Truck. Tyler Shipp sold his Grand Champion Dairy Market Steer for $3,400 last year. Aleisha Hesse, the daughter of Maryann and Roger Hesse and a member of 4-H Spirits, received $900 for her Reserve Champion Dairy Market Steer. It was purchased by S&S Volvo & GMC Truck and County Line Agricultural Service. Last year, Jesse Bickel sold the 2008 Reserve Champion Dairy Market Steer for $2,100. For his Grand Champion Carcass Steer, Seth Stoner, son of LuAnn and Bruce Stoner and a member of St. Marys FFA, received $1,550. Stoner also showed the Grand Champion Carcass Steer last year. That steer earned him $2,200. Those who placed bids on Stoner's steer in 2009 were Advanced Agri-Solutions Cooperation, Potash Corporation PCS Nitrogen Lima Plant, Alan Davis Insurance Agency and S&S Volvo & GMC Truck. Pocketing $1,000 for his Reserve Champion Carcass Steer was Alex Lehman. The son of Cindy and Jerry Lehman is a member of the New Knoxville Livestock Boosters. The carcass steer was purchased by A.G. Boogher & Son Inc., Harrod Insurance, First Nation Bank in New Bremen, Harrod Crop Insurance Agency, Inc., Cargill, Inc. in Sidney and Potash Corporation PCS Nitrogen Lima Plant.
