ST. MARYS — A Verizon land line was reportedly damaged Friday, disrupting telecommunication service across the western portion of Auglaize County.

Portions of Minster, New Bremen and New Knoxville experienced outages, as did Chase Bank and a list of other stores and businesses in St. Marys. The inside of the bank was closed Friday, but bank personnel manned the drive-thru. Officials at the bank said they were unsure of when the bank would reopen for regular business.
Kmart General Manager Rick Folz said the store experienced issues with the outage on Friday.
“We can’t receive calls and we can’t do debit,” Folz said. “We are using cell phones to make calls.”
Folz said the store remained open throughout the day, with minor adjustments to the operation of the store.
“We have to call the credit companies and get approval over the phone,” Folz said. “Other than that it is business as usual.”
JC Penney in St. Marys also said they experienced communication lags. The general manager said they were going “back to the manual way” of checking out customers.
She mentioned the customers were understanding of the situation and that sales were reported as regular.
Third Key at Shoe Department in St. Marys Rachelle Timmerman said she saw a difference in traffic into her store Friday afternoon.
“Big time, I just had someone come in here five minutes ago that said it won’t be back on until tomorrow,” Timmerman said.
She said the store was only able to accept cash and because of that sales were down at the store.
Other stores that experienced trouble included Chief and Hallmark in the St. Marys Square Shopping Center.
Attempts Friday to reach officials with Verizon were unsuccessful to discuss the situation.
