By ANGELA WEAVER Staff Writer ST. MARYS — With school scheduled to start in a few weeks, the St. Marys City School District is seeing similar enrollment numbers to those in the past, an official says.
“We’re in the same range,” Curriculum Director Bill Steinbrunner said. In the elementary schools, 163 children are registered for kindergarten at East Elementary School, Steinbrunner said. “There’s a kindergarten screening next week, so that number could be higher,” he said. So far for the upcoming school year, the district has 63 first-grade students registered at East and 65 first-grade students registered at West Elementary School. There are 70 second-grade students registered at East and 80 second-grade students registered so far, Steinbrunner said. There are 66 third-grade students registered so far at East and 79 third-grade students registered at West. The district has 88 fourth-grade students registered at East and 85 fourth-grade students registered at West. St. Marys has 74 fifth-grade students registered at East and 72 fifth-grade students registered at West. The district also has 64 sixth-grade students registered at East and 82 sixth-grade students registered at West, bringing the elementary schools’ total enrollment, so far, as 588 students at East and 463 students at West, Steinbrunner said, making a total of 1,051 students at the elementaries. “We are down eight kids from last year, according to our official October count,” Steinbrunner said. “We had 1,059 in October, and things will change between now and October.” Steinbrunner estimated McBroom Junior High to have 345 students and Memorial High School to have approximately 740 students enrolled. “That’s close to where we were last year,” he said, adding that the junior high had 342 students enrolled and the high school had an enrollment of 757 students. Steinbrunner said students can be enrolled in the district throughout the year. “But the sooner the better,” he said. “If you’ve got kids who want to enroll, the sooner they get in, the better they get placed properly and a smoother start.” To enroll a student, a parent should stop by the district service center and fill out the enrollment forms, Steinbrunner said. “They should also bring the student’s birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records and custody papers, if applicable,” he said, adding that the district will make copies of the paperwork. “From there, they’ll go to the individual buildings and meet with the principal.” When the student stops by the high school or junior high, Steinbrunner said, they will put together their schedule for the school year. “With the elementary schools, there will be a time to go there and find their classroom,” he said. “Right now, they’re still shut down because of construction.” The district service center is located at 1445 Celina Road and the office hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. |
