Canoe Lessons To Be Offered Saturday Print E-mail

ST. MARYS — A new class is being offered on Saturday for those who enjoy the outdoors but want a little more experience. The Heritage Trails Park District and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources are collaborating to offer a free canoe class. The event is scheduled to take place at 40 Acre Pond, located along Glynwood Road and the Miami and Erie Canal.
“The whole idea is that we have some great places to canoe in Auglaize County, so let’s see how many people are interested in doing it,” Heritage Trails Park District Executive Director Allison Brady said.
Brady said some things she considers left for experts but other things are meant to be tried out. She said she hopes those who participate in the event get an understanding of canoeing and maybe spike an interest in the activity.
“The idea would be that you gain skills that will help you enjoy the sport,” Brady said. “Every sport has a learning curve, that’s what this class will be about, fundamentals, technique and safety.”
One example of what those who participate will learn is what to do when a boat flips.
“Canoes are famous for not staying up right,” Brady said. “They will learn things you can do to make that easier to manage. Fundamentals you can learn that will make it much more enjoyable.”
She said the canoes are good because they allow those in the boats to see nature undisturbed. Brady reminded those interested that the class is free and the boats and life jackets will be furnished by the ODNR.
“My hope is that we will connect people to outdoor pursuits,” Brady said. “Two things I want, people to go outside and play and I want people who are interested in that to help us develop parks in the county.”
Brady said the canoe class is just one of the programs the district will be offering in the future. The class will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and those interested can register or ask questions by calling 419-202-6053. The class is open to anyone 16 and older. For those under 18, a parent or guardian will have to sign a youth up for the class.
