Donald E. Willoughby, 86, 841 S. Beech St., St. Marys, died at 12:35 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the Wapakoneta Manor Nursing Home. He was born March 6, 1923, in St. Marys, a son of Clarence and Ida (Hoagland) Willoughby.
On Oct. 24, 1942, he married Dorothy Jones, she preceded him in death on May 27, 1987.
He is survived by his son, Drake (Sue) Willoughby of Slocomb, Ala.; two grandsons, Shane Hughes of Spencerville; Jimmy Finke of St. Marys.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers, Vernon, Clarence, Earl Willoughby; a sister, Laura Thomas.
He was a 1941graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a scout and saw action in Italy with the 3rd Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. He was a retired truck driver.
He was a life member of VFW Post 9289 in St. Marys; a member of the Wapak Chapter of the Disabled American Vets; a Golden Eagle member of
Eagles Lodge 767 in St. Marys. He was an animal lover, enjoyed playing golf, reading and watching NASCAR races. He was a fan of 24, Jeff Gordon.
Funeral rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, St. Marys, with the Rev. Bill Maki, officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home, where memorial contributions may be directed to the Auglaize County Humane Society.
