Tunes to fill area parks Print E-mail

ST. MARYS — The sound of music will fill local parks on Sunday evenings for the rest of summer, with two different concert series. The concert series that was offered by New Bremen and Minster separately on Sunday evenings has been revamped and combined to offer more music and to allow more of the community to come together.
"The Village of New Bremen and Village of Minster have done things in the past on their own, done through the parks and recreation department," Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce Director Jim Coons said.
Coons said discussion spurred about combining the concert series.
"In the past they did things on their own, with economic times being the way they are and discussion over the past year about how we've got two concerts going," Coons said. "We could make them last longer, stretch out entertainment and not have to make them make choices. Everyone liked that idea."
Coons said the chamber got involved to continue with it's mission statement.
"I got involved because part of the chamber’s mission statement is to foster cooperation among the three villages in the Golden Triangle, promoting things in the three villages," Coons said.
The concert series has already offered music from Ragtime Riverboat Rats, Trinity — gospel evening and music was heard Sunday at the New Knoxville Independence Day Celebration.
The location for the concert series alternates between New Bremen and Minster, but Coons said he would like to get New Knoxville more involved in the future.
"We would like to get New Knoxville involved next year, to put them into the schedule as well, maybe two or three events to get local folks to enjoy music in New Knoxville," Coons said.
He said combining the series into one helps all those hoping to attend.
"We came together because the two villages wanted to provide some quality entertainment for open air concerts on Sunday evenings as they have in the past," Coons said. "By cooperating and alternating Sundays we were able to have the best entertainment for the entire summer. It helps the community a great deal because we have Minster people traveling to New Bremen and New Bremen, New Knoxville folks coming over, we are inviting the entire area to come into our parks on a Sunday evening."
The traditional Summer Concert Series sponsored by Rotary in Memorial Park has also continued this summer. The first show of the summer was held June 28.
"We have them sprinkled throughout the year," Committee Chair of the Summer Concert Series Jeff Squire said.
"We have some traditional favorites such as the Lima Area Concert Bank and the ensemble but we have a couple of new ones," Squire said.
Other music being offered during the Summer Concert Series includes Vern McIntyre, A.C. Swing Band and the Lima Marimba Ensemble.
"It's just nice to do on a Sunday evening, anything you can do to help and have activities in the community is good for the community," Squire said.
All concerts in both series are free, and more information on the Golden Triangle Concert Series can be found by calling the chamber at 419-629-0313.
