Vernon E. Raymond Jr., 61, 127 Marbello Court, St. Marys, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at the Toledo Hospital from injuries suffered in a car-bicycle accident on June 23, 2009. He was participating in the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure and crashed near Bowling Green.
He was born July 12, 1947, in Celina, a son of Vernon and Dorothy (Williams) Raymond Sr. On July 8, 1972, he married Kathy Heaps and she survives at the residence. He is also survived by two children, Jeff Raymond of St. Marys, Annie Raymond of San Diego, Calif.; his siblings, Jean (Fred) Waesch of Celina; Mary Jo (Tom) Walter of St. Marys, Joyce (Chuck) Greenawalt of St. Marys; Kate (Gary) James of St. Marys; Michael (Gina) Raymond of Decatur, Ind., Donald (Karen) Raymond of St. Marys; his stepmother, Ruth Raymond of St. Marys; a brother-in-law, John Steven Heaps of Lima; stepsiblings, Jill (John) Bowers of St. Marys, Jack (Karen) Hollman of Waynesfield; Jim (Darlene) Hollman of St. Marys; Joy (Steve) Sibold of St. Marys; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew, Charles Greenawalt Jr. He was a 1966 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School, he also graduated from Wright State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam era in Korea. He was retired form Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in St. Marys, where he had been an engineer. He loved athletics, especially tennis, which he played at Breakaway Rec Plex in Celina, cycling, hiking, mountain climbing. He had coached little league baseball and YMCA basketball; he was a member of the Memorial High School Alumni Association and also the Wright State Alumni Association. He belonged to Idlewild Men’s Club in St. Marys. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in St. Marys. Funeral rites will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in St. Marys, with Floyd Keith delivering the eulogy, where memorial contributions may be directed to either the Charles Greenawalt Scholarship Fund; Thomas Howard Scholarship Fund, the Joint Township Hospital Foundation Parkinson’s Fund or St. Pauls United Church of Christ.
