MINSTER — A local design company recently was recognized for their work in the area, taking the title of a design winner. Mel’s Decorating, 106 West 4th St., was named the 2008 Design and Installation Winner in a nationwide contest sponsored by Florida Tile Inc. — a first for the locally owned Minster business.
“We participate every year,” Mel’s Decorating Owner Bill Woehrmyer said. “All the businesses participate and submit some of their projects.”
He said each company submits photographs of a specific project and it is judged on the design, use of Florida Tile and style.
Woehrmyer said the project pictures submitted by Mel’s Decorating to the company were of a bathroom suite.
“It was a master suite area bathroom with a walk-in shower, surround tub, countertops and the floor,” Woehrmyer said, noting that the winning design was done locally.
For their project being chosen, Mel’s Decorating received a $200 cash prize and a mention in Florida Tile’s Internet newsletter and made available throughout the year.
“I felt very honored because it’s an award they give out nationally,” he said. “It was a pretty nice job we did there. I designed it myself and I thought it would definitely get somebody’s attention, but I never thought it would be something like this.”
Woermyer said Mel’s Decorating offers a variety of services and serves a 50-mile radius from its headquarters in Minster.
“We have flooring — we specialize in ceramic, customized work in showers and doors,” he said. “We do glass enclosures, carpet, wood, customized drapery. We do decorative painting.”
He added that the installers are Woehrmyer’s own.
“My installers work just for me,” he said. “We are a full-service shop — we do plumbing, electric — we do it all.”
Florida Tile Inc. is a manufacturer and distributor of porcelain and ceramic wall tile since 1954, according to its Web site, www.floridatile.com. Its  headquarters are located in Lakeland, Fla., and the porcelain and ceramic tile is made at a plant in Lawrenceburg, Ky.
The installation and design contest is open to anyone who is a legal resident of the United States, according to the Florida Tile Inc. Web site. The grand prize of $200 is the sole prize offered.
