Two Killed In Separate Crashes Print E-mail
Monday, 29 June 2009
By MATT NICHOLS
Staff Writer
Three separate car accidents over the weekend took the lives of two Auglaize County residents and serious injured another. Broderick Harrison, 21, of Waynesfield, and Anthony Mackenzie, 18, of St. Marys, were both killed after being ejected in separate roll-over accidents, and Hope L. Smith, 37, of New Bremen was listed in critical condition after a two-car collision.
According to a report by the Lima Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Harrison was riding passenger in a 1998 Ford Contour on Saturday night, when the driver, 22-year-old Cagney Slygh lost control while heading southbound on Interstate 75 north of Beaverdam.
Slygh traveled off the left side of the road and into the median, overturned, crossed into the northbound lanes, struck a ditch, overturned again and ejected both occupants.
Harrison and Slygh were transported to Lima Memorial Health System where Harrison was pronounced dead. Slygh was later flown to Toledo by ProMedica Med Flight.
Neither occupant was wearing their seat belt and alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the accident.
The accident is still under investigation.
Wapakoneta Post Sgt. Tom Brookhart said Mackenzie was killed this morning after a roll-over accident at the intersection of Tri-Township and Southland roads, south of St. Marys.
Brookhart said at 5:45 a.m. Mackenzie’s 1998 Honda Prelude was traveling northbound on Tri-Towship Road at a high rate of speed when he ran a stop sign and lost control. His car went off the road, struck a sign and rolled over. Mackenzie, who was not wearing a seat belt ejected him from the car.
A passenger, 19-year-old Nick Fanning, of St. Marys, was also injured in the accident. He was transported to the Joint Township Hospital, in St. Marys.
The accident remains under investigation.
Smith was injured after the vehicle she was riding in was struck by another car Friday evening at the intersection of U.S. 33 and Glynville-New Knoxville Road and sent into a pond.
According to a report by the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Smith was riding northbound on Glynwood-New Knoxville Road in a 1995 Lincoln Towncar when the driver, John Schmidt, 61, failed to yield at the intersection at U.S. 33.
The car was struck by a 2000 Buick LeSabre driven by William Hoovler, 21, of Belle Center, who was traveling west on U.S. 33.
After the collision, Schmidt’s car traveled off the road, struck several traffic signs and parked cars before coming to rest in a pond.
Schmidt and Hoovler received minor injuries. As of this morning, Smith was listed in critical condition at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
