By MIKE BURKHOLDER Managing Editor ST. MARYS — City Councilors Monday night approved a measure that will pave the way for a project to be funded via stimulus dollars. The resolution, approved on emergency, authorizes Safety-Service Director Tom Hitchcock to enter into a cooperative agreement with the city of Wapakoneta on a joint project funded by the Ohio Public Works Commission. Earlier this month, both cities received word they were awarded $100,000 each that would go toward street resurfacing projects. “Anytime you receive $100,000 it is a benefit,” Hitchcock told The Evening Leader following the meeting. “Right now we are working on our engineer’s estimates to find the best way to spend the money.” The $100,000 comes with a 10 percent match, meaning the St. Marys portion of the project will be at least $110,000. Under the agreement, the projects in St. Marys and Wapakoneta would be bid as one. “We haven’t decided what streets will be done,” Hitchcock said. “Under our scheme, it will be a small resurfacing project. It could be a few streets. It may be a four-block project.” The deadline to submit an application and preliminary ideas for the projects is July 1. Councilors also approved an ordinance authorizing Hitchcock to advertise bids for the design of a parking lot and shelter house north of High Street. The proposed location is just opposite the Tumbles and would include a restroom that would be handicap accessible. Hitchcock said he needed to advertise bids for the design of a shelter house because no one in the engineering department has the training to design a structure. Councilors also approved a resolution authorizing the assessment of $14,916 to be placed on the taxes of a parcel located at 848 Indiana Ave. The city recently demolished the former motel that sat on the parcel. Dave Miller addressed councilors regarding a bill he received for the city mowing a property he owns. Miller said the bill, which was for $115, is unwarranted because he attempted to mow the grass but his mower broke. Council President Dan Hoelscher told Miller to discuss the matter with Hitchcock. In other business, councilors: • Approved an ordinance entering into a contract with the Walter H. Drane Company for codification services. • An emergency resolution approving changes to the classification plan of the city. • Approved a resolution regarding the 2010 budget.
The next meeting of the St. Marys City Council is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 13 at the city building located along East Spring Street. |
