By KATIE YANTIS Staff Writer ST. MARYS — The biggest loser was announced Thursday night at the finale of the Grand Health Challenge.
After six months of exercising, controlling portions and trying different diets, the weight-loss challenge has come to a close and a few teams were at the finale to hear the final results. “We always start with a lot of teams and we are always real tickled when we have a big group at the end,” Evening Leader Publisher Deb Zwez said. “Honestly you guys are the reason we do this.” Those with perfect attendance received a T-shirt and door prizes were also given away. Zwez then announced the overall weight lost and those who lost the most. “Of those who finished the Grand Health Challenge 2009, the total amount of weight lost was 2,488.65 pounds,” Zwez said. Zwez then added in those who for some reason or another dropped out to the total pounds lost, which was 3,401.55 pounds. Three Men and a Lady — Joe Brown, Carol Brown, Drew Brown and Brian Schmeider, finished fifth and Three Girls and a Guy — Jenny Riethman, Sharon Kill, Diana Varno and Jay Riethman, finished fourth. The top three teams, who also were the money winners, were: the Try Agains, who placed third and won $200, James Holtzapple, Allen Solomon, Carolyn Zenz and Thomas Keckler. The members of the third team lost 123.75 pounds throughout the challenge. In second place, and the winners of $500, was Thru Thick and Thin, Stacy Lammers, Kevin Lammers, Carol Roby, Tony Roby, who lost 146.6 pounds. First place and the $1,000 top prize went to the Flab Four team made up of Aaron Beougher, Matt Schlater, Chris Cline and Jeff Garman, who lost 188.3 pounds. Beougher also was the top loser in the male section. He revealed his strategy on how he lost 23.65 percent of his body weight. “I was on a low-carb diet, I exercised three to four days, enough to get my metabolism up,” Beougher said. “I needed to lose some weight and the challenge was a good opportunity.” He also said he has signed up for his first 5K run to keep up with the healthy habits that started in the challenge. The biggest loser in the women’s group was a member of the Three Girls and a Guy team, Sharon Kill. Kill lost 15.76 percent of her body weight. St. Marys resident Jay Riethman was the money winner for the top individual loser since Beougher was part of the winning overall team. He also explained how he lost the 79 pounds he shed throughout the challenge. “Diet and exercise,” Riethman said. “I started before the challenge and thought this would be something to keep it up.” A member of the third place team, James Holtzapple also said he used the challenge to lose weight and lost 59 pounds. “I used a low-fat diet and ran, three to four days a week,” Holtzapple said. “I was only able to because my wife and my parents would watch the boys. It was time for me to lose a little bit of weight.” Overall, Zwez said she was pleased with the results of the challenge this year and the dedication the members contributed. “It has been a great challenge for the third year,” Zwez said. For the next challenge, Zwez said there could be a few surprises in store for participants. “We will take a look and try something new and exciting,” Zwez said.
