By KATIE YANTIS Staff Writer NEW KNOXVILLE — New Knoxville Councilors heard an update from Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce Director Jim Coons Tuesday night at the monthly meeting.
Coons delivered some good news and talked about some of the impacts the economy is having on the chamber. “Since our membership consists of businesses that have been affected by the downturn in the economy, our membership revenue has been suffering,” Coons said. “As you know the bulk of our income is from membership investments.” Coons said the membership funds raised were 80 percent of what was expected, but there are new memberships on the front. “One of our new members is La Piazza in New Bremen,” Coons said. “The new restaurant is looking at opening by the end of the month.” Coons continued to update the councilors, reporting on the various workshops such as the job search workshop and the Dayton Development Coalition. He also talked about the upcoming events that will be promoted through the chamber such as Knoxville Independence Days, New Bremen Fireman’s Picnic, Bremenfest, Pumpkinfest and Oktoberfest. The councilors approved a list of items during the meeting. The bid for the Main Street storm sewer project was approved and awarded. “We are awarding the bid to Brenneman Excavating out of Elida, with a bid at $96,802,” Village Administrator Jeff Eschmeyer said. “We spoke with Choice One and they said they did good work for them and they were very satisfied with the work.” The street resurfacing project was also discussed with a resolution Tuesday night that was approved. “It’s money from the Ohio Public Works Commission — $18,000,” Eschmeyer said. “We are increasing our match slightly to $23,338.” Eschmeyer said the roads that would be included in the work are Bremen Street and a block of Walnut Street. “It’s a really nice thing, it will definitely be accomplishing a need we have,” Eschmeyer said. “The earliest it would start would be October, the latest would be sometime next Spring.” With a “heavy heart” Mayor Keith Leffel asked for the councilors to approve the resignation of Police Chief Wyche Sunderland after 15 years of service. The effective date of his resignation will be June 19. “It is a little bit of a shock to me, I have nothing but respect for Wyche,” Leffel said. “Wyche has been our police chief as long as I have been involved with the city.” The councilors presented Sunderland with a plaque of appreciation for the service dedicated to the village. “It has been a great community to work for, I really enjoyed it,” Sunderland said. “I enjoyed the time I spent here.” In other business, the councilors approved: • The negotiation document for the CRA application. • Beer sales for the July 4th Celebration at the park. The councilors moved into executive session to discuss personnel and property. After reconvening, Leffel said councilors decided to advertise the position to fill Sunderland’s spot. The next council meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. July 14. |
