NEW KNOXVILLE — New Knoxville High School received the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) results from this year and joined the list of Auglaize County schools that improved scores from last year. There were 37 sophomores and a few juniors who took the test this year at New Knoxville, all contributing to the high scores.
“We have very impressive numbers when it comes to the advanced and accelerated (categories),” Superintendent Kim Waterman said. “We are excited about that.”
The scores in each subject area are higher this year for New Knoxville. The percentage of students passing in reading increased from 95 percent to 97 percent;  in mathematics, it raised from 90 percent to 92 percent; writing increased 2 percent and the most significant improvement was in social studies — which jumped by 12 percent.
“We are pretty excited about all of that,” Waterman said.
Waterman said the teachers and students both work hard throughout the year to focus on learning and preparing for the test.
“We break it down and say where did we miss our mark,” Waterman said. “The teachers take that seriously, they take this test seriously.”
Waterman said the test is important to the school and the students.
“It’s an important measure of what the state is requiring of us and setting the bar high of wanting our students to succeed throughout their school years,” Waterman said.
Waterman said many of the students were as excited to find out they passed it as administrators were to tell them.
“Mrs. Tebbe called the kids in to let them know their scores and some of them left crying,” Waterman said. “There were just a few that were so ecstatic and relieved that they passed.”
She also said it helps to see the higher numbers to reinforce the school as a whole is on the right track.
“It brings a sense of pride with me, with our teachers,” Waterman said. “That you are doing the right thing, you are teaching what you are suppose to be teaching.”
The students who did no pass the test will have an additional opportunity this summer.
