By MIKE BURKHOLDER Managing Editor ST. MARYS — Officers with the St. Marys Police Department wrapped up a busy holiday weekend with a handful of incidents, including a pair of OVIs.
St. Marys Police Chief Greg Foxhoven said two men received citations of OVI violations. Danny J. Nevarez, 44, 814 Hendricks Ave., received a citation at 9:01 p.m. Saturday after he reportedly hit Memorial High School with his vehicle. “We received information from a high school official that indicated a vehicle struck the building and the driver appeared to be intoxicated or having a medical problem,” Foxhoven said. “Officers responded and he (Nevarez) showed signs of intoxication.” Foxhoven said the building was not damaged and Nevarez, who also received a citation for an open container violation, was taken to the Auglaize County Jail following the incident. At 2:27 a.m. Monday, Lance S. Wacker, 20, 421 N. Walnut St., received an OVI citation. Foxhoven said Wacker reportedly was driving a vehicle when an officer stopped it at the intersection of North Front and High streets after the passenger vomited out the door. “The officer stopped the vehicle to make sure the passenger was OK and made contact with the driver,” Foxhoven said. “He displayed signs of intoxication.” Officers also responded to a domestic violence call at 5:23 a.m. Monday. Foxhoven said officers received a call reporting the incident from a female. During the course of the investigation, Foxhoven said officers found Rafael M. Roderiguez, 30, 227 N. Walnut St., to be intoxicated — a violation of his probation. “Officers knew he was on Municipal Court probation and he admitted to drinking and they contacted his probation officer,” Foxhoven said. “The probation officer wanted him tested and locked up if he tested positive for alcohol. He became combative and threatened the officers and at one point charged toward them with a clinched fist. He was warned he would be Tased if he continued. He didn’t heed the warning and continued to charge and the Taser was deployed.” Foxhoven said Roderiguez was taken to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital and was cleared for incarceration. Overall, Foxhoven said the weekend was busy for officers. Given the holiday weekend and stepped up enforcement along the four-lane highways, Foxhoven said Memorial Day often is a busy time for the department. “It seems to be one of our busiest (weekends),” he said. “There are some long weekends where nothing out of the ordinary occurs, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Memorial Day. But for the most part, people behaved themselves.” |
