By KATIE YANTIS Staff Writer ST. MARYS — Local residents have the opportunity to see the new sanctuary at Wayne Street United Methodist Church Sunday during an open house.
After almost a year of construction, the congregation held the first service in the new facility the Sunday after Easter. “It was a very, very good Sunday,” Building Committee Chair Bill Huber said. “It is a relief, it’s finally here after three years in the making.” Huber said there have been dozens of questions from the community about what the sanctuary looks like. “We have had a lot of people ask, so we thought we would just show the community,” Huber said. The open house will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and refreshments will be available. Huber said he hopes that with the open house, residents will get a better understanding of Wayne Street United Methodist Church. “We want them to understand who we are and what kind of church we are,” Huber said. “We will be here to answer any questions and show the facility.” He also said if those who attend the open house would like to get involved they are more than welcome. “We are always open to people being involved, that is what we are about reaching the community and the un-churched,” Huber said. “We want to show that example.” Huber said he believes the congregation is happy to be back in the building and said old faces were seen at the first service that have not been seen in awhile. “The biggest thing we hear is that we were able to preserve so much of the old with the new,” Huber said. After making it through the construction and not having a sanctuary or education building to hold classes, Huber said the congregation will continue to grow while having the facilities to do the work in. “I think we are going to grow together because we accomplished something together as a congregation,” Huber said. “They (the congregation) have been very understanding. We didn’t have the facilities to do the work, now we do again.” The final touches are being put on the building and there will be more to come. Some of those final touches included the parking lot, which was completed Tuesday. Some of the unfinished aspects include air conditioning in the education building, expanding the parking lot and landscaping. The church consecration will be held May 31, when the bishop will visit the church. The consecration will be held during the first service and the bishop will deliver the sermon during both services.
