MARYS — Fourth-grade students at East and West Elementary Schools took their learning outdoors during “Explore the Outdoors: Conservation Field Day” held on the East Bank of Grand Lake St. Marys Tuesday.
Kara Birt, with the Grand Lake St. Marys park office, said the park has hosted the field day in the past but hasn’t held it in approximately five years. “We’re trying to get the kids outside and enjoy nature,” Birt said. “They can get acquainted with fishing and wildlife and have fun at the same time.” She said the park hopes to continue the event next year. During the all-day time period, the six classes — Deb Wagner, Scott Newcomb, Jamie Carpenter, Angie Woods, Kristy Grear and Christy Wibbeler’s — stopped at seven stations. Those stations included boat safety, fitness, water quality, fish and wildlife, fish hatchery and two fishing stations. Representatives from the park, the Division of Wildlife, St. Marys Fish Hatchery, Mercer County Soil and Water, the Division of Watercraft, the Division of Water, the Division of Parks and Recreation and the Auglaize-Mercer County YMCA gave presentations and helped out during the field day. Patrick Day, a student in Carpenter’s class at West, said he had been learning about the different types of fish in his class. “I like the fishing,” Patrick said of his favorite event during the field day, adding that he has fished in the past. Allison Young said she likes being outdoors. “We learned about boats and life jackets,” she said, while she helped Allison Angstmann with her fishing line. Angstmann said the fishing station was her favorite part. “I like catching fish,” she said. Destiny Schmiesing, in Woods’s class, said she learned about life jackets and fitness. “We also learned about the water cycle,” she said. “I think it’s nice to see nature where it’s supposed to be.” Lexi Kaylor, also in Woods’s class, said the students were able to go on a boat and get on the seats, but they couldn’t touch any of the buttons. “We’re learning about the lake and all the things we can and cannot do,” she said. “I like looking at nature.” Rayonna Sherman, also in Woods’s class, said she learned about taking care of litter. “I like that we’re learning but we didn’t have to do a lot of work in the classroom,” Rayonna added. Her classmate Janicqua Baily said she liked going fishing, while Mackenzie Lyle said she liked the variety. “I like all the activities,” Mackenzie said, adding that the boat was her favorite part. |
