By KATIE YANTIS Staff Writer ST. MARYS — The students at St. Marys Memorial High school filled the seats in classrooms once again Thursday, after filling the streets and businesses of the city Wednesday for the Pay it Forward event.
Memorial High School students were seen all over town Wednesday as they picked up trash, washed windows, cleaned or even performed for the elderly. For weeks prior to the event, there was much discussion and debate on the event. Both opposing and supporting views for the event were heard at board meetings. Thursday morning a handful of students told The Evening Leader what they thought of the event in retrospect. “It was fun, I had to go pick up trash back in the wood by Greenville Road,” freshman Rachel Austin said. “I think it was good.” Fellow classmate Ryan Douglas also said he was glad the event happened. “I thought it was fun,” Douglas said. “It was good that the school did it, I went to Armstrong Park and cleaned up equipment and picked up trash on the way there.” Memorial High School junior Sean Owens agreed with Austin and Douglas. “It was good,” Owens said. “I worked out at the cemetery.” Josh Barnes said he made a point of giving back to the community. “It was definitely a really good thing,” Barnes said. “It’s always good to give back to the people who have given to you.” Barnes talked about what his day involved during the event. “I am part of the jazz band, we went to St. Marys Otterbein Retirement community and Auglaize County Council on Aging,” Barnes said. “We performed for about 45 minutes both the jazz band and the show choir.” The range of duties varied throughout the city, but at the 33 different sites, all of the students were serving the same purpose — giving back. |
