By MIKE BURKHOLDER Managing Editor ST. MARYS — Resident across St. Marys will get the chance to toss out that old recliner and coffee table during citywide cleanup days the next two weeks.
For residents living south of Spring Street and east of the St. Marys River, cleanup day is Saturday. For all other residents, cleanup day is May 16. “I think it’s a huge benefit,” utility office manager Carol Lengerich said. “Otherwise they would have to have special pickup or haul it to a landfill themselves.” Residents are limited to 400 pounds of total refuse that will be picked up. A limit of two large items — which includes chairs, couches and mattress and box spring — will be enforced. However a mattress and box spring counts as a single item. Residents also cannot put items out on their curbs more than 72 hours before their scheduled cleanup day. Lengerich said the rule helps keep the city looking clean. “We discourage it because of rain and (how it) looks,” Lengerich said. “I think the neighbors don’t want to see that stuff sit out that early.” All items to be discarded must be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on the scheduled cleanup day. Also, any items that are missed or are placed out too late will not be picked up and a special pickup must be scheduled with the city. Any carpet and padding must be rolled in section 4 inches or smaller. The same applies to wood — which also must be boxed or bundled. Items that will not be picked up as a part of cleanup day include: appliances, tires, batteries, motor blocks, water heaters, tree limbs, railroad ties, transmissions, auto parts, yard waste, concrete, metal fencing, sinks, swing sets, brick or stone and gasoline tanks. Motor oil, antifreeze, paint, pesticides, herbicides and freon also will not be picked up. Residents wanting to discard of household hazardous materials and appliances may do so from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Auglaize County Recycling Center on St. Marys River Road as part of Household Hazardous Waste Day. Appliances containing freon also will be accepted, with a cost of $15 for removal of the gas. Paint can be dropped off at a cost of $1 per gallon and 50 cents for smaller containers. Latex and oil-based paints must be kept in separate containers. Car tires and light truck tires may be dropped off at a rate of $2 each. Motor oil can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to noon any Saturday at the recycling facility in Wapakoneta and from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the week at the water distribution building on Wayne Street in St. Marys. |
