By MIKE BURKHOLDER Managing Editor ST. MARYS — Residents across the city are being asked to supply input on if they would be willing to take part in a community garden on city property.
St. Marys Safety-Service Director Tom Hitchcock said two residents have approached him with the idea of starting a community garden. While discussion is in the early stages, Hitchcock said he is unopposed to the idea if there is a desire from residents to establish a community garden. “We are seeing if there is any interest out there for this,” Hitchcock said. “I guess the city had one years ago. We thought this would be a good thing for the community.” Hitchcock said while the city would offer land for use, it would not run the community garden. That responsibility would have to fall on the shoulders of volunteers from the community. “We are looking for someone who wants to spearhead it,” Hitchcock said. “Whether it’s an organization or a group of residents. I don’t have the personnel to keep up the gardens, but we do have property to put them on and could probably get it tilled up for them.” Possible sites include plots near the former landfill as well as land south of the city near its well fields. Hitchcock said the site south of the city could be more conducive for a garden given its proximity to water. “We really haven’t set on any sites right now,” Hitchcock said. “Right now these are just ideas and we are looking for anyone with ideas on how to make this run smoothly.” Hitchcock said anyone with ideas can contact Deb Kable at 419-300-1241. |
