By KATIE YANTIS Staff Writer NEW KNOXVILLE — The financial status of the New Knoxville School district was brought up in conversation several times in the monthly meeting Monday night.
All the board members and members of the administration emphasized the importance of the passing of the income tax levy. “We want to stress that it is not adding any new monies,” Superintendent Kim Waterman said. Voters will decide the fate of the 1 percent income tax May 5. “As Marcia (Wierwille) said, it is critical that this passes to keep the ball rolling,” Board President Phil Kuck said. It was announced Monday night that there will be a freeze on administrative salaries for the next school year. Board members also approved the motion to continue the year’s duties without pay. Kuck also mentioned a financial concern not mentioned in Gov. Ted Strickland’s plan to revamp education in Ohio. “There is not much verbiage for programs like Tri-Star in the governor’s bill,” Kuck said. “It is something we will need to at least talk about.” High School Principal Linda Tebbe said there are eight juniors and three seniors involved with the program. “It is something that is going to affect us directly or indirectly,” Kuck said. Treasurer Marcia Wierwille read changes to board members on the five-year forecast, which the board members approved. The changes included adjustments to House Bill 1, a reduction in the income tax during the next five years because of the economy, an increase in purchased services and the replacement of two buses in capital outlay. Waterman commended Dwain Meckstroth for his 14 years of service to the school system. “I want to thank Dwain,” Waterman said. “He was a great teacher and will definitely be missed.” Board members also approved the 2009-10 student handbook. An addition was added concerning the new one call now automated call system. The system will allow Waterman to make a decision on weather, cancellations, rescheduling, push one button and the announcement will go to every student’s registered number. “The students can have six numbers and two e-mails and we won’t have to worry about a phone chain,” Waterman said. The administrative reports were also given during the meeting highlighting student achievements and programs scheduled for the end of the year, including prom, graduation and awards banquets. “A lot is happening these last five weeks of school,” Tebbe said. Board members approved an additional list of items at Monday night’s meeting: • Authorized the treasurer to issue salary notices for the 2009-2010 school year. • Approved the motion to adopt the inter-district enrollment policy for the 2009-2010 school year. • Accepted the three-year extended service agreement with Waibel Trane beginning April 1, 2009 through March 31, 2012. Board members also approved the change in the meeting date for the May meeting. It will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 18. The board motioned to move into executive session at 8:07 p.m., to discuss personnel, no action was taken after the board reconvened. |
