Local Tea Party Planned Print E-mail
Friday, 03 April 2009
By MIKE BURKHOLDER
Managing Editor
ST. MARYS — Residents across Auglaize County will have the opportunity to take part in a one-day, nationwide demonstration opposing legislators in Washington, D.C. Organizers across the country are planning a National Taxed Enough Already (TEA) Party Day for April 15. The event is aimed at spreading awareness and expressing opposition to the recent flurry of legislation passed by members of Congress.
Demonstrations are scheduled to take place in more than 1,500 cities, including St. Marys. Local organizer Judy Weng said the event is a way for residents to express their feelings about the recent actions of Congress.
“I, along with many citizens of our country, am seeing our country go to socialism and fascism,” Weng told The Evening Leader. “I think we are going to unite and take our country back.”
Weng said she decided to organize a local rally after receiving an e-mail and discovering there were no events planned in Auglaize County. The St. Marys rally is scheduled to take place from noon to 1 p.m. April 15 on the sidewalk next to the city building, located along East Spring Street.
“It’s just basically for people to get together across the country at their own city halls and show their opposition about what is going on,” Weng said. “Hopefully it will be peaceful.”
Weng said the event is open to all residents, regardless of political affiliation. Weng also encouraged residents to attend from outside of St. Marys if there are no local events planned in their cities or villages.
“It’s a non-partisan opposition to the recent government practices of both Republicans and Democrats,” Weng said. “It’s for everyone who wants to attend and we ask if they can, to bring an American flag. I don’t know how many people will show up, but if I happen to be the only one there, that’s OK.”
More information, including a listing of events across Ohio, can be found at www.teapartyday.com.
