Marjorie P. Baird, 92, 11302 Bobwhite Lane, St. Marys, died at 10:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at the Otterbein - St. Marys Retirement Center after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 29, 1916, in Sidney, at the family residence, a daughter of Tully and Anna (Pfefferle) Potter.
She was first married to long time Sidney teacher E.J. Hammann and he preceded her in death in 1961. On June 15, 1974, she married Elbert Baird at the First United Methodist Church in Sidney and he survives at the residence.
She is survived by two sons, James J. Hammann of New Orleans, Joseph P. Hammann of Tipp City. She is also survived by her brother Thomas (Ann) Potter, Whispering Pines, N.C.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Helen Lees, Frances Dilbone Anderson and her brothers, Donald, Robert and Paul Potter.
She was a 1933 graduate of Sidney High School. During her professional career she was the administrative assistant in the law office of Urban Dooley; the court reporter for Shelby County; the administrative assistant at Parkwood Junior High (Northwood) and at the Stolle Corp., from which she retired in 1978.
She was a long standing member of the First Methodist Church where she served on the Official Board and was a member of the Methodist Church in New Knoxville.
She was a member and past president of the Sidney Altrusa Club, a founding member of the Sidney Theater Guild and an avid reader.
She was a confident crossword puzzle solver who worked in ink. She loved her family and was a loyal friend to many who knew her warmth and nurturing kindness.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25, in the Meyer Chapel of the Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Center with the Rev. Dennis Gaertner officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in the Graceland Cemetery in Sidney.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday, April 25.
Memorials may be directed to the Otterbein Retirement Community where the Bairds have resided for 15 years.
