By MIKE BURKHOLDER Managing Editor ST. MARYS — St. Marys City Councilors passed two pieces of legislation Monday night that will pave the way for new rail crossings in the city.
Rail crossings at Vine Street and West Street will be replaced by R.J. Corman following the approval of two resolutions by councilors. According to the legislation, the city will pay for the materials and R.J. Corman will provide the labor for the project. “We try to do the worst crossings in town first,” St. Marys Safety-Service Director Tom Hitchcock said. “It’s easy to determine.” For the Vine Street crossing — paid for through Community Development Block Grant funds — the city will provide $31,400 to R.J. Corman. The city will then provide $52,037.10 to the railroad for the West Street crossing — a project that is part of the 2009 street program. “A few years ago we used CDBG funds to replace crossings,” Hitchcock said. “Each year we try to do one with that.” In other business, councilors: • Approved an emergency ordinance appropriating deficiencies in the 2009 budget. The lone request is for an additional $6,200 for medical claims. • Approved the second reading of a resolution authorizing the engagement of Benesch, Friedlander, Copland and Aronoff, LLP, as bond counsel for the city. • Set meetings for the Water/Wastewater and Solidwaste Committees at 5:15 p.m. and 5:25 p.m. April 6. The next meeting of the St. Marys City Council is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 13 at the city building located along East Spring Street. The meeting is open to the public. |
