By MIKE BURKHOLDER Managing Editor ST. MARYS — An eastern Ohio man now faces a year in prison after being found guilty of using the Internet to solicit sex from a minor.
Kevin G. McKinnon, 51, of New Concord, was found guilty of one count of importuning, a fifth-degree felony, this week during a trial to the court in Auglaize County Common Pleas Court. Common Pleas Judge Frederick Pepple ordered a presentence investigation and revoked McKinnon's own recognizance bond pending sentencing. McKinnon is scheduled to appear in court at 3 p.m. May 8 for a sentencing hearing. He also will appear for a sexual offender hearing, where he will be classified as either a Tier I, II or III sexual offender. "I am pleased with the verdict and outcome," St. Marys Police Chief Greg Foxhoven said. "This is the fifth verdict out of seven and I am pleased with the way they are moving through the court system." McKinnon is one of seven suspects nabbed during an online sting late last year and early this year regarding importuning — soliciting a minor for sex via the Internet. Foxhoven said McKinnon's case transpired quickly from first contact to arrest. "The chatting started when Patrolman Brian Christopher was monitoring a chat room at 2:23 a.m. Sept. 10," Foxhoven said. "He was arrested at 12:53 p.m. the same day. It was very quick." McKinnon was arrested after arranging to meet whom he believed to be a 15-year-old girl from St. Marys for sex. Foxhoven said the 10-hour progression surprised investigators. "I think he thought the opportunity was there," Foxhoven said of McKinnon. "He was going to be in town for business, maybe that was legit or not. The fact is that not much time elapsed from the time he started talking to the time he was arrested. They all don't happen like that." New Concord is east of Columbus on Interstate 70 and approximately three hours from St. Marys. |
