By ANGELA WEAVER Staff Writer ST. MARYS — The District Service Center was a busy site Wednesday afternoon as spectators sat, and stood, waiting to hear the results of each bid for the work on the new grades six to 12 building.
Statewide representatives, and a few from Indiana, filled the DSC despite the blizzard-like conditions. “We were worried about the weather,” St. Marys Superintendent Mary Riepenhoff said after the bidding. The representatives gave approximately 60 bids — with some bidding on multiple items — on the 11 bid packages and multiple combination packages, which were opened and read aloud by Project Manager Chad Stevens with Gilbane Building Company. The casework package, which was estimated to cost $1.695 million had an apparent low bidder of Farnham Equipment with a bid of $1.175 million. There were four casework bids. The roofing package, which was estimated to cost $1.125 million, had an apparent low bidder of Ohio/Indiana Roofing with a base bid of $1.09 million, with alternates. There were eight roofing bids. The site work package, which was estimated to cost $875,000, had an apparent low bidder of R.D. Jones with a base bid of $634,750. There were seven site work bids. The fire protection package, which was estimated to cost $485,000, had an apparent low bidder of Vulcan with a base bid of $332,820. There were six fire protection bids. The flooring package, which was estimated to cost $395,000, had an only bidder of Cincinnati Flooring with a base bid of $304,070 with alternates. The food service package, which was estimated to cost $540,000, had an apparent low bidder of Rizzi with a base bid of $519,890. There were five food service bids. The general trades package, which was estimated to cost $12.95 million, had an apparent low bidder of Ferguson with a base bid of $12.127 million. There were nine general trades bids. The temperature controls package, which was estimated to cost $750,000, had an apparent low bidder of Johnson with a base bid of $444,820. There were four temperature controls bids. The plumbing, HVAC and electrical amounts are yet to be determined because those three packages were grouped into additional combination packages. “They have to wait to do the final tabulations,” Riepenhoff said. The bids will be further reviewed and calculated by Gilbane who will then make recommendations to the St. Marys Board of Education for approval. Business Manager Kurt Kuffner described the turnout as “tremendous,” and cited two reasons as to why the district received so many. “One, we have a good project, and two, the contractors are hungry,” he said. “We’re thrilled.” Riepenhoff said she was proud of the teamwork in the community relating to the project. “We’re overwhelmed with how well the project is going,” she said. Wednesday’s bids also showed a positive outlook on the project’s budget. “The initial results show us as significantly under budget,” Kuffner said. “Every dollar we can save is a benefit to our community.” |
