ST. MARYS — St. Marys City Councilors today are expected to vote on a measure to purchase a piece of history. Councilors will be presented with an ordinance authorizing the purchase of approximately 5 acres of land — dubbed the Girty property — along the St. Marys River, near K.C. Geiger Park. According to the ordinance, the land is in the immediate vicinity of several historic sites, including James Girty’s Cabin, Charles Murray Trading Post, the Lutheran Cemetery, Fort St. Marys and Fort Barbee.
The legislation authorizes $12,000, including closing costs, be spent to acquire the tract of land.
The funds, if approved, will come from the Capital Improvement Fund.
Councilors also are expected to hear the first reading of four additional pieces of legislation, including one regarding Riverside Bluesfest.
During a previous city council meeting, members of the K.C. Geiger Park Committee gave a presentation on the event. They also unveiled a revamped schedule for the festival, changing the event to a Saturday and Sunday format.
The resolution, if approved, would permit beer sales in K.C. Geiger Park Sept. 5 and 6 — the dates of the 2009 Riverside Bluesfest. Councilors approved similar measures, with no objections, the previous two years.
The meeting of the St. Marys City Council is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at the city building located along East Spring Street. The meeting is open to the public.
