Voters to decide levy Print E-mail
Thursday, 15 January 2009

ST. MARYS — After an organizational meeting naming the Board of Education’s president and vice president, board members passed a resolution of necessity that would renew an emergency tax levy currently in the district. “There are no new taxes,” Treasurer Tom Sommer said of the levy during Wednesday night’s meeting.
The levy, which has a five-year duration, raises $1.8 million during the duration and was placed on the list in 2004, with collection beginning in 2005.
After being approved by the board, the resolution will be sent to the Auglaize County Auditor who will calculate the levy’s millage before submitting it to the Auglaize County Board of Elections, Sommer said.
The levy would appear on the May 5 ballot.
The board also approved the 2009 appropriations, which Sommer presented to them
“The appropriations are just under $20,500,000,” he said, adding that it is a 2.21 percent increase of the previous year’s appropriations of $20.05 million.
Ralph Wiley and Eric Langsdon were nominated and sworn in as president and vice president, respectively, of the Board of Education during an organizational meeting held at 7 p.m. before the regularly scheduled meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Board members also
• Renewed the district’s membership in the Ohio School Board Association and Legal Assistance Fund.
• Approved two referral items from the Tri Star Advisory Council — yearly meetings and entrance criteria.
“The meetings were cut to six a year, every two months starting February,” Board member and Tri Star committee member Rees McKee said.
McKee also said Tri Star is changing its entrance criteria.
“For every three tardies a freshman or sophomore accrues, it counts as one absence,” he said, adding that the change was developed because students were accumulating multiple tardies and weren’t being penalized for them.
St. Marys Superintendent Mary Riepenhoff also discussed the district’s debate of switching from FM radios to push-to-talk phones, leaning to purchasing more of the FM radios because of the one-time cost.
The Board of Education will hold a work session 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9 at the District Service Center to discuss the bids and alternates received for the grades six to 12 building, and the board will also hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11 in the St. Marys City Council chambers.
