ST. MARYS — A local service club gathered with family and friends for a night of fun and fundraising. The St. Marys Kiwanis Club met Saturday night at Varsity Lanes Bowling Alley for the Third Annual Kiwanis Scotch Doubles, one of the organization’s primary fundraisers for the year. The event contributes funds towards several club community projects including the Goodfellows Christmas Wrap, Make A Difference Day and Reading is Fundamental.
“It’s a lot of fun and we know that the proceeds are going to go back to the children of the community,” St. Marys Kiwanis Vice President Kevin Glass said.
Throughout the evening, couples were required to compete in several techniques that are not normally used, such as bowling while sitting in a chair and bowling between their partner’s legs.
More than 26 couples participated in Saturday evening’s event. Cost was $25 per couple, $17 of which was donated to Kiwanis. A 50/50 raffle was also held.
Despite the inclement weather, they still had a good turnout Varsity Lanes co-owner and Kiwanis member Carl Keysor said.
“Last year’s event brought in about $900,” Keysor said. “The club passes out a lot of money for projects each year. For me this was an easy way to raise a chunk of money for the club and it a lot of fun.”
This year’s goal was to raise $1,000 for the community service projects the organization supports.
“We’ve got a lot of non-Kiwanians participating,” secretary Doug Moran said. “It’s a social event, (and) it’s for a good cause.”
