NEW BREMEN — Grandparents of New Bremen kindergarten students were treated to songs and laughter during the school’s annual Grandparents’ Day Program. From “Granny At The Fair” to “Our Alphabet Song For You,” the youngsters entertained some of the most important people in their lives — their grandmothers and grandfathers. It is a program kindergarten students at the New Bremen Elementary School have participated in for several years. The program was held on Monday and Tuesday afternoon in the cafeteria.
For the students, the best part of the program is simply having a chance to show their grandparents how much they mean to them, New Bremen Elementary Principal Karen Smith said.
“It gives the students an opportunity to work on some special songs and special skills with their grandparents,” she said.
Alma Schmitmeyer said she enjoyed watching her grandson, Dan Homan, in the program.
“(It’s) surprising how much they learned and listened,” Schmitmeyer said. “I thought they had a wonderful program.”
The kindergartners practiced their routine during the month of November, working on their motor skills and coordination.
“They love ‘Tony Chestnut’ just because it’s silly,” kindergarten teacher Donna Schmitmeyer said of the children’s favorite song. “They can act it out. They pick up on that one the fastest.”
At the end of the program, students showed their manners while introducing their teacher or principal to their grandparents. They also served popcorn and punch to their grandparents.
“They think that’s neat because they get to serve grandma and grandpa,” Schmitmeyer said.
