ST. MARYS — A few teams took the plate on a blustery Saturday morning to play softball to benefit a good cause. With most players armed with coats and sweats, a total of four teams, with 12 people on each team, took part in a softball tournament.
The tournament began at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at K.C. Geiger Park benefiting the Shop with a Cop program, despite the 40 degree temperatures and a few rain drops.
Organizer and player Roger Bowersock said he has put together tournaments like this one in the past, including a softball tournament during Summerfest. He said he hoped to hold another tournament like this one again next year.
“We like to play ball and we wanted to get together, so we picked out an organization that would benefit from it,” Bowersock said before the first two teams took the field.
Sponsors for the tournament included Weldtech, Lost in the 50s Diner, KRH Enterprises ltd., TD’s in Coldwater, Knotty Pine and The Evening Leader, Bowersock said. He said the majority of the participants were from St. Marys, but there were also a few from around the area, including Celina and Coldwater.
St. Marys Police Officer Brian Christopher was on hand before the first game to receive the $505 donation generated from the tournament.
“It helps Shop with a  Cop and really helps the needy families,” Christopher said of the tournament. “It’s nice to have the community come together and help out.”
Lynn Vanover, along with Jacklynn and Mariah Prater, sat on the bleachers wrapped up in blankets while they waited to play in the second game.
“Because it’s for the kids,” Vanover said of why she came out to the game, “even though we’re freezing our bottoms off.”
Jacklynn Prater said she came out because it was for a good cause.
“We figured we’d be nice about the whole situation,” she said.
The Shop with a Cop program assists families of underprivileged children in the area by enabling those struggling financially to acquire clothes and toys for their children’s Christmas presents.
