Coldwater tops New Bremen Print E-mail
Saturday, 25 October 2008

By RANDY WILKER
EL SPORTS CORRESPONDENT
COLDWATER — The Coldwater Cavaliers concluded their football regular season just as the way it did every week of the season as they defeated the New Bremen Cardinals 38-0 on Friday night at Coldwater.

“The kids played hard tonight,” New Bremen head coach Rob Messick said. “We were able to go from the 20 to the 20 with no problem, but once we got that far we kept shooting ourselves in the foot.”
The Cavaliers got on the board on their first possession after a New Bremen punt. They started at their 45 and after an incompletion, Cory Klenke completed a 35-yard pass to Mitch Giere, putting the ball at the 20. Two plays later Klenke went up the middle for a seven-yard touchdow with 9:45 left in the first quarter.
Following another Cardinal punt, Coldwater got started again on offense. A couple of completions by Klenke to Tony Harlamert brought the ball to the 30-yard line and they did the rest on the ground with Dylan Gillis going the final four yards for the touchdown to make it 124-0 with 5:44 left in the first quarter.
“Defensively we did some nice things,” Messic said. “We just couldn’t get off the field on third down. They would have a third and 15 or third and 20 and they would get a first down.”
coldwater scored one more touchdown in the first quarter when Harlamert went in from four yards out to make it 21-0 with 33 seconds left in the first quarter.
After the kickoff, Coldwater recovered a New Bremen fumble at the 10-yard line with 20 seconds left in the quarter.
On the third play of the second quarter Mario de la Rosa kicked a 24-yard field goal to make it 24-0.
New Bremen then mounted their longest drive of the game with an 18-play drive that moved the ball down to the Coldwater 16-yard line. But a fumbled snap moved the ball back to the 26 and an incompletion on fourth down ended the promising drive.
The Cavaliers responded with a four-yard touchdown pass from Klenke to Mitch Giere with 41 seconds left in the half with Coldwater up 31-0.
Coldwater scored four plays into the second half with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Keith Wenning to Adam Rammel to make it 38-0.
The loss dropped the Cardinals to 3-7 to end the season filled with ups and downs.
“The biggest problem we have at New Bremen is  a lack of participation,” Messick said. “If you look at the scores, except for two or three games, we have been in the games at halftime. Then we get whittled down. They are making substitutions and we can’t change because we don’t have anybody left.”
“We have a strong freshman class,” Messick continued. “And they will become sophomores next year and should be good. We had some good seniors this year that did some good things and I think our program is moving in the right direction because of what they did. They played very hard tonight.”
With the completion of the new weight complex, Messick sees nothing but good things in the future.
“That will be huge for us,” Messick said. “We have to thank the citizens of New Bremen for building that, but money doesn’t buy success. We have to use that and work there and I am just glad that they have given that to the kids.”
The Cavaliers will likely host Cincinnati Wyoming next Friday night in the opening round of the playoffs.
