Reflecting on Sept. 11 Print E-mail

ST. MARYS — It has been seven years since a nation was glued to televisions and listening to radios with anticipation, fear and sadness.
Sept. 11, 2001, is a day that many will never forget. As our nation remembers the day of tragedy on the seventh anniversary, some are taking a moment to remember and to listen about what happened.
Just like other events in America’s history,  there are those who were part of it,  those who were old enough to remember it for the rest of their lives and those who had to learn about it from family members. When the planes flew into the twin towers, the Pentagon and when one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, it send shock waves through America.
Flights were grounded, phone lines were busy and businesses closed all over the nation to watch the day unfold.
St. Marys residents and owners of Capabilities Driving School Bill and Karen Blumhorst reflected on the day as the anniversary approached.
“I was pretty nervous, wondering what was going to happen next,” Blumhorst said.
Blumhorst said he was out with a drivers education lesson when the first plane hit.
“We stopped in Lima to get gas and that was when I heard,” Blumhorst said.
Karen Blumhorst agreed the day is one that will never be forgotten.
“I remember getting home and watching it all night,” Karen Blumhorst said.  “Our whole sense of life changed on that day.”
While many can remember every detail of the day, including where they were, some only remember seeing those around them being upset.
Rachel Osmon, 16, and a St. Marys Memorial High School student, reflected on Sept. 11.
“I remember I was in my fourth grade class, I remember our principal turning on the TV and telling us what happened,” Osmon said.  “I didn’t know exactly what was going on, I saw people being upset so I thought that was what I need to be.”
McBroom Junior High Student, Molly Albert ,13, said she understands now what the day meant, but did not understand when it happened.
“ I remember a lot of people getting injured and a lot of people died, it happened because of terrorists,” Albert said.
Draker Turner, 12, also remembers Sept. 11.
‘I remember hearing terrorists took over a plane and crashing it,” Turner said.  “It made me feel really bad because one of my cousin’s friends used to work up in the World Trade Center.”
Turner now understands the depth of what happened on that day.
“I know people are going to say that i was one of the worst things,” Turner said.
Moulton resident Bob Hardin remembers everything about that September morning.
“I remembering seeing it on TV as it was happening — I didn’t really know what was happening,” Hardin said. “I was terrified.”
Hardin, a Word War II veteran, compared Sept. 11 to the attack on Pearl Harbor.
“That was a sneak, we’re talking peace and then they did that,” Hardin said.  “They are all a bunch of sneaks. I just know they don’t like us, I think we have ourselves pretty well protected now — too many people lost their lives.”
