Victor W. Schneider, 95, a resident of Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community, formerly of Dayton, died at 4:05 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Otterbein St. Marys.
He was born on May 7, 1917, in New Bremen, the son of Otto and Alma (Doenges) Schneider, and they preceded him in death.
On July 12, 1944, he married Hannah Shewmon, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 28, 2009.
He is survived by his two children, Richard (Beverly) Schneider of Dayton and Jane (Kayne) White of Englewood; by three grandchildren, Christopher (Margit) White, Ryan (Mikiko) Schneider and Heather (Valentino Lee) Schneider; a great-grandson, Caden White; a sister, Rosemary Williams of St. Marys.
Vic grew up in New Bremen and graduated from New Bremen High School in 1935. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a staff sergeant in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters.
He retired from McCall Publishing in Dayton, where he was a linotype operator.
He enjoyed playing cards, using his metal detector, traveling and taking long walks. He was a member of Shiloh Congregational Church in Dayton.
Funeral rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Meyer Community Chapel on the campus of Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community, with the Rev. Vince Lavieri officiating.
Burial, with military honors, will follow at German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Friday at Otterbein St. Marys, where memorial donations may be directed to the Otterbein Benevolent Fund.
