NEW BREMEN — A three minute stretch midway through the third quarter allowed the Versailles Tigers to close up a deficit and by the end of the quarter grab a three-point lead. The Tigers hit free throws down the stretch to defeat New Bremen 58-47 Friday night.

New Bremen moves to 1-2 and 0-1 in the MAC.

“Right now we are learning from all our mistakes, while they have made all those mistakes since they played in the state last year,” New Bremen head coach Adam Dougherty said. “We are right there and right on the cusp of it. The first 16 minutes is us competing and scrapping and being fearless. Then it gets a little close and we get tight because we haven’t been there. A week from now we will be better.”

The defending Division III state runner-up opened its season with a MAC game and responded.

“It was a total team effort tonight,” Tigers head coach Scott McEldowney said. “A lot of players came off the bench and gave us quality minutes. Jacob Wenning had a nice game coming off the bench. Anytime you play in the league and get a road win it is going to be tough.”

Damien Richard was the leading scorer for the Tigers with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Ben Homan led New Bremen with 18 points. Carson Manger added 15 points.

Versailles (1-0, 1-0) will travel to Covington tonight, while the Cardinals (1-2, 0-1) will entertain St. Marys tonight.
