NEW KNOXVILLE — Versailles rallied from an early fourth quarter deficit to emerge from a defensive battle against the New Knoxville girls basketball team 32-29 on Thursday night.
With the game tied at 26-26, Christa Puthoff scored on a second-chance putback with 36 seconds left.
On the ensuing possession with 16 seconds left, New Knoxville was called for an illegal screen to give the ball back to Versailles. Rachel Kremer was fouled and made both charity tosses for a 30-26 lead.
New Knoxville’s Haley Horstman converted a layup and was fouled with nine seconds left. Horstman converted the free throw making the score 30-29. Following a Tiger timeout, Kremer was fouled and made both free throws with six seconds left.
New Knoxville had one last shot but a three-point attempt was tipped and the Tigers survived for a 32-29 victory.
“I told the girls in the locker room that they played their hearts out tonight,” Rangers head coach Tim Hegemier said. “It’s the same old story that we are not shooting the ball very well. If we can start dropping some shots I think things will start going our way. We can’t get them to fall right now.”
The Rangers (2-4, 0-2) will entertain the Spencerville Bearcats next Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m., while the Tigers (7-1, 2-0) will travel to Minster next Thursday.
NEW BREMEN 40, PARKWAY 36
NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Cardinals picked up their first Midwest Athletic Conference win 40-36 over Parkway with some stingy defense, great free throw shooting and a big night from Alyse Clune from beyond the 3-point arc.
Clune knocked down four of eight from 3-point range and scored 14 points. Rosie Westerbeck added 10 points for New Bremen, which improved to 4-2 and 1-1 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
Sierra Fent led Parkway with 11 points. Cami Hellworth added 10 points off the bench for the Panthers.
MINSTER 35, ST. HENRY 31
Minster improved to 5-0 and 2-0 in the MAC with a 35-31 win over the Redskins.
Minster hosts Versailles in an MAC showdown next Thursday night at 6 p.m.
