Tuesday Sports Round-Up
VAN WERT 11, ST. MARYS 1 — Van Wert opened Western Buckeye League play with an 11-1 win over the St. Marys softball team Tuesday at K.C. Geiger Park. St. Marys broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Abby Smith singled with one out and went to second on a fielder’s choice, Sarah Mabry ripped a single into center field to bring home Smith to make it 11-1. Katlyn Brown and Mallory Kill added singles for the Roughriders. Van Wert struck for two runs in the top of the first on a pair of RBI singles, and the Cougars added four more runs in the top of the second. Van Wert capped off the scoring with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Mallory Kill pitched for St. Marys. She struck out one in five innings. St. Marys will host Piqua on Thursday at 5 p.m.

MINSTER 12, JACKSON CENTER 1: Minster scored in the game’s first four innings to run-rule Jackson Center 12-1 in five innings on Tuesday night. Alexis Robinson got the win in the pitching cirle for Minster. Stephanie Albers doubled and Sara Hosey tripled for the Wildcats.

NEW KNOXVILLE 9, PERRY 7 — New Knoxville came back from a big deficit late once again, scoring seven runs in the top of the seventh to beat Lima Perry 9-7 on Tuesday night on the road. The Rangers entered their final at-bat down 6-2, and for the second straight night overcame a big deficit. KV Mooney and Wes Meyer led off the seventh with a single. Jake Allen singled home a run. Spencer Wolf walked to load the bases. Michael Porter singled in pinch runner Ryan Schott . Tyler Shreve then singled in Allen and Wolf. Adam Howe singled in Porter. Cody Shaw then walked to load the bases. KV Mooney drove the ball past the shortstop to score Shreve and Howe to give the Rangers a 9-6 lead. Meyer went 2-for-4, Allen was 3-for-5 with a stolen base.
Shreve started the game on the mound, giving way to Adam Howe, who picked up the win.
VAN WERT 10, ST. MARYS 7 — Van Wert scored six times in the bottom of the fifth inning to surge ahead of the St. Marys baseball team and never trailed again in a 10-7 win over the Roughriders in a Western Buckeye League opener on Tuesday night. Nathan Vogel doubled for the Riders, who fell to 0-7, 0-1 in the WBL. Van Wert evened its record at 3-3, 1-0 in the WBL. Codie Deaton pitched and took the loss on the hill for the Roughriders. Joey Hurless and Brant Henry tripled for the Cougars, while Tyler Williams added a double. St. Marys travels to Shawnee on Friday night at 5 p.m.
BOTKINS 3, MINSTER 1 — The Botkins baseball team picked up a big win over Minster Tuesday night, 3-1. Josh Schwartz took the mound for the Trojans and shut down the Wildcats. The Trojans gave up only three hits in the game. Evan Dietz came through with a clutch RBI single in the bottom of the 5th to seal the victory. Ethan Wolf pitched four innings for the Wildcats, as Hoying and Vince Brown came in for relief to finish off the game. Jay Eilerman had a double for the Wildcats and for the Trojans, Alex Roberts went 2-for-3 with a double. Botkins moved to 5-3 on the season. Minster falls to 5-1.
ANNA 20, NEW BREMEN 2
ANNA — The Anna baseball team scored 12 times in the bottom of the sixth inning in a run-rule 20-2 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday. Jacob Gilberg went 2-for3 with a double and Alex Feltz tripled for New Bremen, which fell to 2-6 on the season. Anna improved to 2-4.
VAN WERT 3, ST. MARYS 2
ST. MARYS — Van Wert captured both doubles matches in three sets along with third singles to edge the St. Marys boys tennis team 3-2 on Tuesday. St. Marys’ Cole Brooks won first singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, over Lane Mansfield of Van Wert. The Roughriders’ Jason Freewalt took second singles against Eric Yeung, 6-2, 6-3. Van Wert’s Nick Etter beat the Roughriders’ Nick Rohr, 6-3, 6-3, at third singles.
At first doubles, Luke Stevens and Jon Lisa downed the Roughriders Kevin Dammeyer and Zac Nelson in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. At second doubles, the Cougars’ Eli Alvarez and Alex Bair defeated Noah Hartsock and Justin Nedderman, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Andrew Mackie had a perfect night, leading the way for the boys team. with wins in the 100 meter dash, 400 meter dash, high jump, and as a member of the 1600 meter relay. Isaac Kuntz won the mile and was part of the 1600 meter relay. P.J. Kiernan won the 300 meter hurdles and was part of the 1600 meter relay. Marcus Nitschke was also part of the winning 1600 meter relay team. Jacob Shaw won the 3200 meter run. Ben Kuck took second in the shot put and Ethan Kuck finished second in the long jump.
On the girls side Cassie Boyle had a perfect night winning both the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs. Haley Horstman won the long jump and 300 meter hurdles. Horstman was also second in the 100 meter hurdles and 200 meter dash.
Hannah Privette took second in the 3200 meter run, and Lydia Hoelscher was second in shot put.
