Troupe To Take Stage

July 28, 2011

ST. MARYS — A group of teens will take the stage in August, performing a musical never seen before in St. Marys.

The show, “13! The Musical,” tracks the transition period of a young Jewish boy who is forced to move from New York City to Appleton, Ind., after his parents’ divorce.

“It’s about him trying to start at a new school, and he still has his Bar Mitzvah,” Grand Lake Theatrix founder Vickie Shurelds said.

“He has to make new friends quickly. It’s about how he tries to fit in as a Jewish kid in New York City to living in the Midwest.”

Shurelds noted that the show features 24 actors between the ages of 12 and 20.

“It’s great because everyone in the show is 12 and a half or 13, and all of the actors we have in the show are between the ages of 12 and 20,” she said.

“So they all remember being 13 very vividly, or they are going through that transition right now so it makes for very interesting conversations during rehearsal.”

Shurelds said the actors are from all over the area, including Lima, St. Henry, New Knoxville, Celina and Versailles among others.

“The kids are coming from a pretty far distance to be in the show so that’s exciting,” Shurelds said.

Audiences should expect to be amazed, she said.

“When they see the amount of talent that we have on stage, I think they’re going to be extremely impressed because we have some of the best voices that we’ve ever had here on our stage in St. Marys,” Shurelds said.

“We’ve been very lucky because we’ve had some outstanding performers on our stage, but because this show in particular focuses so much on young people, many people are going to be extremely impressed with every kid when they open their mouth because their voices are just phenomenal.”

Above all, audiences will witness the bond the kids have made over the course of putting together the musical, she added.

“The biggest thing is that they’re going to see this bond between the kids that they’ve developed themselves,” Shurelds said.

“This is a show that they don’t really have to prepare a lot, they’re really working with material that they already know, so they are adding their own flavor to it.”

Shurelds expects that audiences will be ecstatic at the conclusion of the show.

“When they leave our theater, they are going to want to go do something,” she said.

“They’re going to want to go dancing or to hang out with people that are fun or something like that, because it really just gets the adrenaline pumping.”

“13! The Musical” will be showing at 8 p.m. Aug. 19 and 20 at the St. Marys Theatre Grand Ballroom. Tickets for the event are $10 ($5 for students or seniors) and can be purchased at Spring Street Coffee Shop, Regent Theatre or online at GrandLakeTheatrix.org.

Audiences also have the option of a dinner at Spring Street Coffee Shop that will be served by the actors a 6 p.m. before the show.

The cost of the dinner and show is $18.
