TRACK: Minster's Collins, boys 3200 meter relay team win regional titles
TROY — Minster senior long jumper Derek Collins and the boys distance relay team won regional titles while pole vaulter A.J. Huelsman and the girls 3200 meter relay team punched their tickets for Columbus for the Wildcats on the first day of the Division III regional track and field meet at Troy Memorial Stadium on Wednesday.
Collins captured the regional long jump title when he cleared 21 feet, 4.5 inches on his final jump. Collins edged New Lebanon Dixie’s Ryan Jordan, who had a jump of 21 feet, 4.25 inches.
The Minster boys and girls distance relay teams qualified for Columbus as well with a win and a second-place finishes on Wednesday in the lone running finals of the day.
The Minster boys 3200 meter relay team ran neck-and-neck with St. Henry throughout before pulling away for the regional title. The Wildcat team of Andy Albers, Eric Dahlinghaus, Dominic Slonkosky and Francis Slonkosky ran an 8:04.14. St. Henry finished second with a 8:09.65 time.
The Minster girls 4-by-800 meter relay team of Samantha Hoelscher, Hannah Butler, Gabrielle Barga and Natalie Fausey finished second with a time of 9:35.85. The Wildcats finished second to regional champion Versailles, which clocked in at 9:23.9.
Minster sophomore pole vaulter A.J. Huelsman is headed to Columbus next week after finishing third in the boys pole vault. Huelsman cleared 13 feet, eight inches.
The top four finishers in each event will move on to the state meet next week in Columbus.
The Minster boys team leads the standings after the first day with 26 points. Second-place Anna has 17 points.
The Minster girls are currently in seventh place with eight points after the first day.
The running finals and the rest of the field events will be contested on Friday night beginning at 5 p.m. at Troy Memorial Stadium.
