Thursday Sports Round-Up: Rider wrestling wins two, swimming splits matches

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — The St. Marys wrestling team continued its strong run against Western Buckeye League teams on Thursday night.

The Roughriders earned a pair of wins at a tri-match at Shawnee.  St. Marys picked up five pins in its 43-31 win over Shawnee and topped Defiance 49-26.

St. Marys’ win over the hosting Indians was keyed by the five pins.

St. Marys’ Garrett Hower pinned Zach Fleeger at 113 pounds. At 138 pounds, Chris Swanson pinned Dustin Boroff. Ryan Slife pinned Bryce Cox at 160 pounds. Spencer Knous earned a pin at 182 pounds over Jacob Hixenbaugh. At 285 pounds, Logan Simons pinned Brandon Howell.

Dakota Knous won a 14-12 decision Joe Arthur at 145 pounds. The Riders’ Jaden Heitkamp won an 11-0 decision over Chandler Kohlhorst at 152 pounds. Neil Perry won via forfeit at 195 pounds.

The Roughriders jump right back into action on Saturday at Indian Lake, and St. Marys then travels to Ottawa-Glandorf next Thursday as  the Feb. 2 WBL championship meet at Elida fast approaches.

SWIMMING

The St. Marys boys and girls swim teams split a pair of dual matches on Thursday night in Wapakoneta. The Roughrider boys beat Coldwater, 59-17, and fell to Wapakoneta 62-29. The Roughrider girls defeated Coldwater, 62-29, and fell to Wapakoneta 60-31.

St. Marys’ Jared Deubler won the boys 200 yard individual medley with a 2:08.53 time along with the boys 100 yard backstroke with a 57.4-second time.

The Riders’ Molly Menker won the girls 100 yard butterfly with a 1:10.42 time.
