Thursday Sports Round-Up

It was closely-contested first game, but the New Knoxville volleyball team took  over in the second and third games to give the Rangers a 25-18, 25-15 and 25-14 victory over the St. Marys Roughriders on Thursday.

Erika Angstmann led St. Marys with 10 kills. Reagan Aller added eight kills. Ally Angstmann had 11 digs. Natalie Kuenning had 19 assists. Kuenning, Rachel Meier and E. Angstmann had one service ace apiece. The Rangers (2-2) will have their first home match next Thursday when they host the St. Henry Redskins in a MAC match, while the Riders (0-4) travel to Shawnee next Thursday for a WBL match. In the JV match New Knoxville won 25-16 and 26-12.

MINSTER 3, SPENCERVILLE 0
The Minster volleyball team won a close first game and then cruised in the ensuing two to pick up a 25-20, 25-7, 25-14 win over the Spencerville Bearcats.
Minster’s Erica Oldiges and Sara Hosey each led the Wildcats with seven kills. Lauren Roetgerman and Megan Kaiser each added five kills, and Bridget McGowan had four kills. Regan Hahn led the Cats with 11 assists. Oldiges and Roetgerman each had two service aces. Schylar Miller led Spencerville  with 6 assists and 3 aces. Katie Merriman and Chelsea Hanjora each had 3 kills. The Wildcats host their Spike-Off invitational on Saturday. Minster plays Sidney at 9 a.m. and plays Arcanum at 2 p.m. In the other matches, Sidney plays Graham at 10 a.m., Graham faces Springboro at 11 a.m., Springboro plays Dixie at noon and Dixie and Arcanum play at 1 p.m.
Spencerville travels to Delphos St. John’s on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

FORT LORAMIE 3, NEW BREMEN 0
Fort Loramie controlled the action against the New Bremen volleyball team on Thursday, beating the Cardinals 25-19, 25-16, 25-20 in non-conference action.
Julie Brown and Victoria Wente both had five kills for New Bremen. Brown also had a team-high eight blocks. Karli Jones added 15 assists. Tarynn Clune had 10 digs. Fort Loramie’s JV team knocked off New Bremen, 2-0.

MARION LOCAL 3, JACKSON CENTER 2
Marion Local outlasted Jackson Center 25-22, 18-25, 25-27, 25-23, 16-14, in a marathon match at Jackson Center on Thursday evening. Marion Local’s Gina Kramer had a school-record 33 kills, breaking the old single-match kill record of Alyssa Winner. Kramer also had 31 digs. Allie Thobe added 33 digs. Hannah Heitbrink had seven kills and three blocks. Meg Schwieterman had seven kills. Allie Wendel dished out 30 assists, and Katie Elking had 21 assists. Emily Mescher led the Flyers with four blocks. Marion Local moved to 2-0 on the season.
 

BOYS SOCCER

ST. MARYS 2, NEW KNOXVILLE 0: It took until the 74th minute of the match for St. Marys to break a scoreless stalemate when Austin Quellhorst put in a rebound shot with 6:15 left in the match.

The Roughriders added another goal for the 2-0 win over New Knoxville. St. Marys put in a second goal, a Zac Nelson putback header with five minutes left to put things away. The Roughriders travel to Marysville on Saturday for a 5 p.m. match against the Division I Monarchs. New Knoxville plays at Indian Lake on Monday at 6 p.m.

BOYS GOLF

MINSTER 151, DELPHOS ST. JOHN'S 208: The Minster boys golf team had three golfers break 40 and coasted to a 151-208 win over Delphos St. John’s. Minster’s Xavier Francis shot a medalist even-par 36 to lead the way. Freddie Purdy carded a 37, John Burke had a 38, Austin Brackman shot a 40, and Matt Trushaw added a 42 for the Wildcats. Minster plays at Marion Local on Monday in MAC play at 4:30 p.m.

NEW BREMEN 176, ST. HENRY 187: Alex Britton fired a medalist 38 and Travis Bertelsen added a 39 to lead  the New Bremen boys golf team to a 176-187 MAC win over St. Henry on Thursday. New Bremen’s Jacob O’Neill added a 49 and Max Travis carded a 50 for the Cardinals’ winning score. Alex Evers was low-man for St. Henry with a 43. Brian Kremer shot a 44. Jason Jacobs and Greg Post each had 50s. New Bremen hosts Parkway on Monday at 4:30 p.m. in a MAC match.

COLDWATER 178, NEW KNOXVILLE 213: The Coldwater boys golf team earned a 178-213 win over New Knoxville at the Mercer County Elks on Thursday. Coldwater’s Tyler Kanney was medalist with an even-par 36. Mitch Diller added a 43, Adam Heyne carded a 47 and Jarren Kunk scored a 55. David Boesche led New Knoxville with a team-low 47. Shane Topp shot a 54, Brandon Steineke added a 55 and Nick Thobe shot a 57. New Knoxville is 1-2 on the season, 0-1 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. The Rangers travel to Fort Recovery on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. MAC match.

GIRLS SOCCER
LIBERTY-BENTON 3, ST. MARYS 0
: Liberty-Benton’s Kayla Trevino put in two goals to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 win over the St. Marys girls soccer team on Thursday evening in Findlay. L-B’s Sam Johnson had two assists. St. Marys falls to 1-2 on the season. The Roughriders open Western Buckeye League play on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 5 p.m.
