Thursday Girls Hoops Round-Up: Cougars down Roughriders, Cardinals rally past DSJ

VAN WERT — Van Wert outscored the St. Marys girls basketball team 18-2 in the third quarter and went on to capture a 45-27 victory over the Roughriders on Thursday night .

LeeAnn Bertke led the Roughriders in scoring for the second straight game with 12 points.

St. Marys finished the regular season with a 3-19 record and a 2-7 mark in Western Buckeye League play. The Roughriders have lost six straight games.

The Riders will play Wapakoneta in a sectional semifinal on Tuesday night at Spencerville at approximately 8 p.m. Shawnee and Elida play the opening game at 6:15 p.m.

Erin Morrow scored a team-high 11 points for Van Wert.

Van Wert won the junior varsity contest, 34-25. Lindi Cisco scored 18 points for the JV Roughriders.

NEW BREMEN 49, DELPHOS ST. JOHN"S 45

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Cardinals ratcheted up the defensive pressure in the second half and in the fourth quarter made 10-of-10 free throws down the stretch to come back and defeat Delphos St. John’s 49-45 in a MAC game on Thursday.

 Haley Moeller nailed a triple to give the Cardinals their first lead of the game 43-42 with 1:46 left.

Katie Vorst was the leading scorer for DSJ with 18 points along with seven rebounds. Erica Saine also scored in double figures with 12 points.

Three players scored in double figures for New Bremen with Kyla Otting scoring 17 points and grabbing five boards. Haley Moeller had 11 points and three rebounds. Meagan Brandt added 10 points. Hannah Holdren led the Cardinals in rebounding with eight boards.

New Bremen's Meagan Brandt, Kyla Otting, Lauren Bertke, Hannah Holdren, Sam Luedeke, Amber Paul and Haley Moeller all played their final home game.

“Credit goes to the seniors for hanging in there and keeping their composure,” New Bremen head coach Chris Burden said. “Most of them have been playing basketball for four years and the others three or two years and they know what is at stake. The seniors hung in through thick and thin. It was a nice way to go out in their home schedule.”

New Bremen ends the regular season at 11-11 and 3-5 in the MAC. They open tournament play next Tuesday at Coldwater against Minster in the second game. Delphos (8-14, 1-8) will start tournament play against Parkway on Tuesday at Van Wert.


CELINA 75, ELIDA 60: Kylee Bader’s 20 points led Celina to its eighth win in WBL play, but the Bulldogs ended up a game shy of Bath, who clinched the WBL title with a win over O-G on Thursday. Hillary Heiby added 15 points, Beth Homan had 14 points and Katie Stahl had 13 for Celina.

WAPAK 69, SHAWNEE 58: Sara Warner scored 24 points to lead Wapak, as it went to 11-11 on the season.
