TENNIS: St. Marys doubles team of Newlove and Brooks advance to sectional semis

LIMA — The St. Marys doubles pairing of Troy Newlove and Cole Brooks won a pair of matches on the first day at the Division II sectional at UNOH to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

Newlove and Brooks, the Riders’ top two singles players during the regular season, teamed up to play doubles for the postseason.

They defeated the Elida team of Greeley and Thompson in the second round, 7-5, 7-5.

Brooks and Newlove then defeated Lima Central Catholic’s Frankart and Kahle by a matching 7-5, 7-5 score.

The St. Marys doubles duo will face Shawnee’s Smith and Barton on Saturday in the semifinals.

St. Marys’ Jason Freewalt lost a marathon singles match to Bluffton’s MIchael Deter, 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 6-7 (7-9).

St. Marys’ Tyler Parent lost a first round singles match to Van Wert’s Eric Yeung, 6-3, 1-6, 2-6. The Riders’ Jacob Little lost to Ottawa-Glandorf’s John Lammers, 0-6, 1-6. St. Marys’ doubles team of Kevin Dammeyer and Josh Parker fell to O-G’s Kuhlman and Drerup, 6-7 (2-7), 0-6.
