The St. Marys boys tennis team edged Wapakoneta 3-2 in a Western Buckeye League tennis match on Friday to earn positioning for the upcoming WBL tournament.
The Riders’ Cole Brooks won second singles over Wapak’s Joey Jose in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
“The match came down to second singles and Cole Brooks really came through tonight for our team,’ St. Marys head coach Bill Ruane said. “He lost the first set and then really picked up his game. He won some key points and games and was able to beat a very solid opponent. It was a great win for him.”
St. Marys’ second doubles team of Jacob Little and Tyler Parent earned a win over Josh Moots and David Gerstner, 6-2, 6-2.
St. Marys first singles player Troy Newlove beat Nicholas Oen, 7-5, 7-5.
Wapakoneta earned wins at third singles and first doubles.
The Redskins’ Andy Faller defeated the Riders’ Jason Freewalt, 7-5, 6-2, at third singles.
The Redskins’ Rex Azbell and Anthony Kennard beat Devin Dammeyer and Josh Parker at first doubles, 6-0, 6-2.
St. Marys improved to 10-5 and 6-3 in the WBL.
The Riders will compete in the WBL championships next Thursday and Saturday in Lima.View more articles in:
