Suspect Arrested In Homicide
CELINA — The suspect wanted in connection with the Nov. 8 death of a Rockford woman was arrested Wednesday morning in Fort Wayne.
Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey announced law enforcement officials have taken Daniel Charles Martin, 40, of Fort Wayne, Ind., into custody. Martin was on the run for close to two months in connection with the death of Melinda Shinn, 26.
A day after the shooting, the Mercer County Sheriff's Office requested the assistance of the United States Marshal’s Service in locating Martin.
For the past several days, deputy U.S. Marshals and Mercer County sheriff’s deputies have been tracking Martin's location. On Wednesday morning, law enforcement officials raided the home Martin was staying in. Law enforcement officials also found an AK 47 assault rifle in the home, which was seized. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is investigating the ownership of the rifle. Martin was taken into custody without further incident.
“We are very grateful for the US Marshal Service assistance,” Grey said in a news release. “Without their help and unique tracking capabilities, we would still be looking for Mr. Martin. This is a great example of how federal and local agencies can and should work together.”
Shortly after responding to the scene of the crime, the Rockford Police Department requested the Mercer County Sheriff's Office handle the investigation. Martin fled the area after the incident and the SUV he was believed to have been driving was later recovered in Fort Wayne. Law enforcement officials believed Martin had family in the Fort Wayne area. An arrest warrant for Martin was issued on Nov. 8 and a subsequent Mercer County grand jury issued an indictment during the December term.
“This fugitive investigation was one of our top priorities and we immediately added Martin to our most wanted Dangerous Dozen list,” Northern District of Ohio Assistant Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Andrew Deserto said in a news release. “Thanks to the great teamwork with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals in Fort Wayne, we were able to safely bring this dangerous fugitive into custody and remove another deadly weapon from the hands of a criminal.”
